PHOENIX - A warm fire crackled in the background as the Phoenix Suns took part in one of their favorite offseason traditions: listening to Russell Westbrook tell stories of his time with the Magic.
As members of the richest family in the NBN, most Suns players had never left the expansive fields on which their Victorian mansion sat, but the elder Westbrook was adopted into the family two years ago; before that, the vet lived a humble life in a faraway land called Orlando.
The Suns sat in a tight circle around Westbrook and looked up at him, their eyes full of wonder.
"Mr. Westbrook," shouted a child's voice from the back of the group. "Is it true that in Orlando they sent away the children they couldn't afford?"
Westbrook's eyes darkened, his visage saddening in the flickering light of the fireplace.
"Yes, Devin, that happened quite a lot," he explained as gently as he could. "I remember one child, Immanuel, who was taken down to the market and traded to another family for just one first round pick."
At this, the children gasped and tittered among themselves. Eventually, another Sun ventured ventured another question, sneering. "Mr. Westbrook, is it true you're still the franchise leader in points and assists in Orlando, even though you haven't played there in three years?" Laughter rang through the group of children.
"Now, now, Mikal, that's not a very nice thing to say," chided Westbrook. Despite his words of warning, he smiled at the children. "But yes, and Mr. Westbrook is top two in rebounds and steals, too." The children delighted at this, laughing heartily.
Soon, it was time for bed. "An Orlando song first," begged the children together. "Just one, please, Mr. Westbrook!" The merry Westbrook quickly obliged. "But, to bed first," he insisted.
In the bedroom, Westbrook's baritone voice filled the room.
There's skeeters crawling into all my holes... Oh, why did I agree to a TO...
The boys drifted off to sleep one by one, their little heads filled with thoughts of a different life in Orlando.
